Iceland, Eldgjá

"Eldgjá, the Fire Chasm"

Iceland sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the line of volcanic activity that marks the separation of the North American plate and the Eurasian plate (see Plate Tectonics). In 934 or 935 a major erruption from this chasm poured out the largest amount of lava in historic time.
