New Zealand, the South Island
Milford Sound

photos by Alan Grinberg

At the end of the hike we took a boat from Sandfly Point to Mitre Peak Lodge on Milford Sound. The famous (think travel brochure) Mitre Peak is in the mist.
Mitre Peak, with the shorter Footstool in front.
Perhaps a more typical view of Mitre Peak. It rains on average 200 days per year for a total of over 300 inches of rain per year (25 feet, or 8 meters!).
You can not have waterfalls like this without the rain. Even though Milford Sound connects to the salty Tasman Sea, there is so much water flowing into the sound that the top 10 feet is fresh water.
The steep sides of Milford Sound create a wind tunnel effect, so when the wind is from the West the waterfalls sometimes flow uphill!
