You can see from the focal length of the lens that I really was quite close to this bird, maybe 10 feet away. I was standing still, taking pictures of him/her soaring, kiting, and looking for food, when it came down and landed close to me on this concrete wall. I took about 8 shots before it took off again. Close encounters of the wild kind.
