874 AD. Iceland settled by Vikings from Norway, displacing Irish Monks.
930 Creation of the Althingi Parliament.
1389 Mt. Hekla errupts, followed by smallpox and other epidemics.
1944 Iceland becomes an independent republic from Denmark.
1963 The island of Surtsey is created by an underwater volcanic eruption.
1980 Iceland's president (Vigdis Finnbogadottir) becomes the world's first democratically elected female head of state.
1989 Iceland abolishes a ban on beer (March 1 is "Beer Day")
2005 Iceland is ranked number two on the 2005 United Nations Human Development Index
2006 Mary, Andrew, and Alan visit Iceland to take a walk, eat some shark, and snap some photos.
